Support EngineeringCapital Project Design ReviewPlant Engineering provides continuous support on all capital projects. We are heavily involved throughout the entire design review process, construction, and commissioning. We know what works and what doesn’t work from previous designs all over campus. After a construction project is complete, Plant Operations is given the task of maintaining the building. We are able to take what we have learned and use that information to help improve current design projects. And not only do we review designs so that occupants will have optimal comfort, we also do our best to ensure that the mechanical and electrical systems are easily maintained by our Plant Operations staff. Investing our time upfront during the design and construction process pays off throughout the life of the building. Major Projects in AEC: www.aec.bf.umich.edu/projects.html/ AES SupportAES is the engineering design group within Plant Extension involved with minor projects throughout campus. We provide support on their projects by sharing our extensive building history knowledge. We also have good familiarity with all campus buildings systems. AES web page: www.aec.bf.umich.edu/ Shop / Zone SupportOne of our key missions is to provide engineering support to all Facilities Maintenance shops. This includes the central shops as well as the zone maintenance shops. Typical support includes addressing problems from a poor system design, assisting with replacement equipment selection, providing communication to facility managers on maintenance issues, etc. Facilities Maintenance web site: www.plantops.umich.edu/maintenance/ Direct Digital Controls (DDC)Plant Engineering is the hub for all DDC activity. During capital design projects, we provide control drawings to the outside engineering firms, as well as help finalize control sequences. We also provide the DDC cost estimate for the project. After construction has started, we are first to review the control drawing submittals and work with the controls contractor throughout construction. We also work with our own internal Plant Operations DDC shop on programming issues. Typically on outside construction projects, the controls contractor supplies and installs all sensors and pulls all wires, and then our controls shop does all point terminations, programming, and start-up. We also work with the Plant Ops DDC shop on existing programs and sequences. |
