Customer Pay Projects

The Plant Engineering team provides engineering support to non-general fund customers through our customer pay projects. While our primary responsibility and focus is to our general fund customers we attempt to meet the needs of the university as a whole.

Our primary customer pay clients are Athletics, Housing and UM Stores. We also provide engineering support to Construction Services as part of their design-build program.

Other customer pay projects are handled on an individual work order basis. Plant engineers are assigned to these work orders as required to meet the needs of the customer.

The general services that we provide as part of our customer pay program are very similar to the services that we provide to our general fund customers in what we have coined “over the counter” business. They include:

  • Responding to building complaints (too hot, too cold, no air flow, etc.)
  • Analyzing the physical condition of equipment and making recommendations for equipment repair, replacement or upgrade.
  • Selecting replacement equipment and assisting with bidding and purchasing process.
  • Providing engineering design for the installation of replacement equipment.
  • Reviewing equipment shop drawings.

Plant engineers have daily work loads with general fund activities such that our customer pay support is presently limited.
