Primary Systems Facts

The Primary Systems work group is comprised of:

  • 1 foreman
  • 12 High Voltage electricians
  • 3 Central Power Plant Electricians
  • 2 or more employees working out of classification (EWOCS)
  • 1 or more electrical apprentices

… and is responsible for the operations and maintenance of 280 Unit Substations with over 4800 pieces of equipment, including:

  • over 650 Primary Switches
  • 280 Transformers
  • 280 Sections of Secondary Switchgear
  • with 3200 Circuit Breakers
  • and 450 Watt Hour Meters

… and also responsible for the preventive maintenance for the medium voltage distribution systems on campus down to the unit substations (the box on the pad) within campus buildings, including:

  • the medium voltage switchgear at 5 switching stations and 5 line-ups of medium voltage switches
  • over 60 miles of medium voltage cable
  • within more than 30 miles of concrete encased duct banks
  • more than 540 vaults and manholes including 370 manholes on Central Campus and another 143 on North Campus
