Power & Lighting

The Power & Lighting work group is responsible for the installation, testing, and operation & maintenance (O&M) of all outdoor electrical systems. Additionally, the Power and Lighting work group maintains campus maps, online diagrams, and building floor plans showing the location and wiring of all lighting poles and fixtures which incorporate relevant information about each unit: location, lamp type, voltage, wattage, etc.

Utilities Power and Lighting is responsible for the following:

  • Exterior building lights, recessed lights, and flag pole and sculpture lights
  • Pole lighting of U of M-owned streets
  • Parking lot and pedestrian lighting
  • Electrical and security systems in the steam tunnels
  • Parking Structure electrical systems, including lighting, pay stations and signage
  • Electrical systems related to outlying boiler systems
  • Lighting O&M support of all emergency phones on campus
  • Temporary power support for electrical system outages (planned or emergency) via portable generators
  • Work in cooperation with Miss Dig notification system for locating underground lighting and low voltage services
