Utilities Electric Shop

The Utilities Electric Shop, a part of Electrical Operations and Engineering (EOE), is responsible for the electrical infrastructure at the University of Michigan. The Utilities Electric Shop is composed of a Manager, two foremen, a work control coordinator, and logistics coordinator. It also has a full-time Trades staff of over 30 people including 3 Classifications of Electricians, apprentices, plus additional contracted workers. Within the Utilities Electric Shop there are two work groups: Primary Systems and Power & Lighting.

  • Primary Systems (formerly: High Voltage) installs, maintains, repairs and tests Utilities power distribution equipment. This includes electrical systems within the Central Power Plant, all building substations and switching stations on campus which consist of primary switchgear, transformers and breakers, and all manholes, duct bank systems, and primary cables from service points to campus building substation equipment.
  • Power & Lighting (formerly: Outside Lighting) installs, maintains, repairs and tests outdoor electrical systems that include street, parking lot, pedestrian, exterior building, and parking structure lighting and electrical power. It additionally supports other Utilities Shops for the operation and maintenance of the electrical systems related to outlying boilers, electrical systems in the steam tunnels, and any electrical component associated with emergency phones.

In Coordination with Electrical Engineering and various contractors the Utilities Electrical shop works diligently to maintain the power and lighting infrastructure of the University of Michigan campus to help provide a safe, secure, reliable and efficient electrical system.
