Programs and Training ActivitiesEmployee development has always been a major priority at Building Services. In 1993, the department allocated additional resources to this area. More focus was placed on improving the work and personal life of the employee. In addition, all new employees are required to attend the department's forty hour New Employee Orientation and Technical Training.Professional and Personal Development TrainingTechnical Training Programs and New Employee OrientationAll new employees in our department attend a thorough new employee orientation (NEO) program. Our technical training and orientation program combines video presentation and classroom activities with a great deal of interactive discussion. The format maximizes employee interest and participation and assures excellent retention of information.The following topics are addressed:

All employees go through annual re-training on OSEH required safety topics and the customer service techniques section of NEO. Employee Working Out of Classification (EWOC) ProgramThe EWOC program is a career development program designed to provide training to qualified custodial employees who desire upward mobility into maintenance mechanic and grounds positions. Employees in this program go through a rigorous training schedule that combines on the job training with classroom work.Each EWOC participant goes through 40 hours on the job training per week from May through September for up to three years. In the Maintenance EWOC Program, each participant also must receive classroom instruction in math, technical algebra, basic wiring, plumbing, etc. The classroom work is coordinated through Washtenaw Community College. The objective of this program is to provide career mobility to custodial employees. Although participants may leave the program without having obtained a maintenance or grounds position, they will have received three years of valuable training that may qualify them for career advancement. Computer WorkshopsSelf-paced courses in Microsoft Windows & Word (beginning & intermediate) and Introduction to the Internet.Adult Education ProgramsIn 1993, Building Services at The University of Michigan established an Adult Education Program called M-People. This provides employees an opportunity to improve their basic skills in math and English to pass the entrance exams for community college. In addition, employees without a high school diploma are given the opportunity to prepare for the GED Test. Many employees have participated in our Adult Education Programs.Courses Being Offered:Basic SkillsTargets employees for college preparation needing to review basic math and algebra and English reading and writing skills. English as a Second Language Targets employees who want to improve basic English speaking skills. GED Preparation
