He participated (1973-1993) in the efforts to amend the University of Michigan's non-discrimination bylaw so as to include sexual orientation as a class protected from discrimination. In 1999 Dr. Sandra Cole (founder and former Director of the University of Michigan Health System's Comprehensive Gender Services Program) and he wrote the language of Ann Arbor's non-discrimination policy re gender identity and gender expression.

He is presently employed at the University of Michigan's HR/AA Office as Diversity Coordinator in the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE). He provides training on general and specific diversity concerns and responds to reports and complaints of discrimination and discriminatory harassment. His portfolio includes sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and HIV/AIDS as related to sexual orientation or gender identity.
