Plant Operations’ Quick Facts

• Plant Operations has nearly 1,300 very talented people.
• 1,030 Plant Operations employees are represented by one of three Unions: the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME, Local 1583), the University of Michigan Skilled Trades, or the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
• 261 Plant Operations employees hold non-bargained-for positions, including: 95 non-exempt professional/administrative, 156 exempt professional/administrative, and 10 technical staff members.

• 543 Gigawatt Hours (million KWH) of electricity are used by UM per year.
• The Central Power Plant buys 3.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year.
• In total, UM consumes 2.70 trillion BTU's of energy per year.
• More than 50,000 tons (600 million BTU/hr.) of chilling capacity is operated and maintained.
• UM uses over 20 percent of the water consumed in Ann Arbor (or 1.4 billion gallons per year).

• In FY 2007, 2,121 tons of paper and 154 tons of mixed containers were collected for recycling.
• Over 6,140 tons of trash was sent to the landfill.
• In partnership with the City of Ann Arbor, Waste Management Services piloted the first food waste composting program in the State of Michigan.
• Over 35 tons of food waste was composted in FY 2007.
• The University of Michigan was recognized as the 2001 Outstanding School Program by the National Recycling Coalition.
• 110,000 fans at every football game, generated 15.7 tons of empty water bottles and 10.94 tons of cardboard for recycling during the 2006, 7-game season.

• Including utilities, Plant Operations total transactions processed were $323 million in FY 2007.
• The Plant Operations Call Center issued over 58,000 work orders in FY07.
• Construction Services performed over $30,000,000 worth of construction in FY07.
• The average custodian cleans 32,000 sq. ft., Building Services cleans 250 General Fund buildings.
• Preventive maintenance is scheduled for over 38,900 pieces of building equipment.
• Plant Operations issued over 45,000 preventive maintenance work order phases in FY07.
• Over 103,000 work orders were issued in FY07.
• There are approximately 40,000 locking doors on campus. On average, over 14,700 keys are issued each year. Slightly over 7,500 keys are returned each year.
• We maintain and test over 57,280 fire protection devices and 2,620 sprinkler valves.
• 1600 fume hoods are maintained by Plant Operations.
• The 800Mhz trunked radio system consists of 3 towers, nearly 1,650 radio units and 6 dispatch consoles at the Department of Public Safety and some units are configured to interface with the Washtenaw County 800 Mhz radio system. On a typical day, the system handles over 10,750 calls.
• There are over 650 users authorized access to the Plant Operations Facility Management System (FMS).
• In 2008, the Plant Operations computer network consists of 61 unit specific servers, 461 desk workstations, and 72 laptops in addition to 3 home computers. There are 719 Plant Operations employees with computer accounts. A team of 7 system administrators and 2 webmasters support the Plant Operations computer network.
• There are 140 outlying boilers on campus maintained by the Outlying Boiler Shop.
• Utilities maintains 500 roadway lights, 2700 pedestrian lights, 900 parking lights, and 100 field lights on campus.

• Grounds Services maintains 43,954,509 SF of land in Ann Arbor.
  • 6,789,271 SF is building footprint (15%).
  • 37,165,238 SF is open space (85%).
• We maintain 11,832,296 SF of turf.
  • If you were to mow this in a straight line using a standard push mower you would travel 1,160 miles or from Ann Arbor to Tampa, Florida.
• We maintain 295,830 SF of annual and perennial beds.
  • Equal to 11 football fields.
• We maintain 1,927,086 SF of planting beds.
  • Equal to 42 football fields.
• We maintain 4,066,758 SF of sidewalk, plaza, and specialty paving.
  • You could build an 8 foot wide sidewalk from Ann Arbor to Saginaw with this amount of paving.
• We maintain approximately 14,000 inventoried trees on campus
• 6-1/2 miles of tunnels with 29 miles of pipe carry most of the utilities throughout the central campus.
• There are 249 General Fund buildings containing 14,300,114 GSF(Gross Square Footage) as of June 1, 2008.
