CONSTRUCTION SERVICES

Implementing Vision 2005

In the Fall of 2000, Construction Services began examining the way we provide our services. We focused on the changes we anticipated in the campus community (we did not anticipate former President Bollinger’s departure) and how we needed to structure Construction Services to meet the needs of our customers. These meetings resulted in the creation of several new job classifications; Manager of Construction Projects, Senior Estimator, and Project Assistant I and II. The key to our new structure is creating partnerships with our customers and becoming integral parts of their organization.
Accordingly, our Managers of Construc-tion Projects and the Associate Director meet regularly with our major Facility Managers. In these meetings, we discuss the status of current projects as well as future ones. We work out all issues so that the needs and expectations of our customers are met by our performance on their jobs.
Our customer groups are overseen by the following Managers of Construction Projects:
  • Bill Welch – whose core responsibilities of campus are ISR, SPH I and II, NIB, Legal Research/Law School, Wolverine Tower, Athletics, North Campus, and Housing. Bill is supported by two Foremen I; Steven Bird and Rockey Bennett
  • Rick Eathorne – whose core responsibilities are Business Administration and the Medical School. Rick is supported by one Foreman I, Terry Burmeister
  • Terry Johnson &ndassh; whose core responsibilities are LSA and it’s surrounding areas. Terry is supported by two Foremen I; Keith Flowers and Tom Rumple
  • Randy Fink – whose core responsibilities are U-M Hospital and its outer medical facilities. Randy is supported by three Foremen I; Doug Wolgat, Bill Gowen, and Greg Detmer
Along with the support from the Foremen I, our Managers of Construction Projects are assisted by Construction Project Assistants. In the Spring 2002 issue of the Plant Exchange, we introduced Nathan Wilson and Alan Swan. Nathan and Alan are just two of our four Construction Project Assistant I’s. We’d like to now introduce the additional two, Michael Heffelfinger and Aaron Bennett. Michael comes to Construction Services after four and a half years of previously working with D & R Heating and Cooling where he worked as a Lead Installer. Michael is a graduate of MSU with a degree in Commercial Marketing. Aaron comes to us after working with Tetratech NUS located in Williamston where he worked as a Project Manager for three years. While a student, Aaron also worked four summers for the Plant Operations Outside Lighting crew as a temporary Laborer. Aaron graduated from Lawrence Tech University with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Other introductions we’d like to make are:
  • Jeanette Craft, Secretary II, who previously worked for Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC). Jeanette had been with AES for three years before coming to Construction Services
  • Gregory Detmer, Foreman I, who previously worked for Facilities Maintenance.
  • Rodney Greene, Carpenter.
  • Anthony Allain, Sheetmetal worker.
Please also help us in congratulating Steven Bird in his promotion from Carpenter to Foreman I. Steven has been with the U-M and Construction Services since he began as an Apprentice Carpenter in 1989.
Best Wishes to Our New Retirees
Construction Services also recently wished two employees a fond farewell. This past March, Howard Staples, Construction Project Manager, retired with 27 years of service, and Dennis Gibb, Construction Laborer, retired on May 3rd with 35 years of service.
